Nice words concerning Romania, as I am myself from Romania. You should see the religious life from here (in monasteries). And, yes, the number of monks is accurate. It might be even more bigger. 🙂
As a matter of fact, last year we went to Rila: what a place! Unfortunately, we were told that currently only less than 10 monks still live there. 🙁
We went also to Basarabovo, twice. Very nice place. And also at the Vitosha monastery. And in other places.
What strikes me in Bulgaria is the humbleness (if I may say so) of the Orthodox religious life in Bulgaria: small churches, some of them having little decorations. We should not forget the centuries of Ottoman reign over Balkans.
But, no matter that, Bulgaria means Orthodoxy.
